‘Thresholds’ at Marchmont House

A special weekend 'house party' event in the company of the artists Andrew Mackenzie & Rebecca Appleby.

About this event

With our 'weekend house party' residential series we have created events where we hope to explore the relationship between artnature and humanity.

'Thresholds' is a weekend in the company of two inspiring artists Andrew Mackenzie & Rebecca Appleby who are united through an exploration of the overlaps and relationships between human made forms (such as architecture) and organic growth (such as trees and roots), decay and transformation.

Against the backdrop of the climate crisis, themes of how we exist as part of the world, rather than apart from, have never been more relevant.

Both artists have recently completed major commissions for Marchmont House, Rebecca with ‘Fragmented Root’, a bronze sculpture exploring the idea of structure in nature and Andrew with ‘Woodland Structure’, a large scale sculptural installation in a young oak woodland. This event will present an opportunity to engage with the work and the wider contexts, both physically and through discussion and conversation with the artists. Both artists are represented by the &Gallery in Edinburgh, who have been key in bringing this event together.

We are also delighted to announce that Saturday's panel discussion will be chaired by curator, producer and mentor Susanna Beaumont.

This is a rare opportunity to meet the artists and hear them discuss their work, at the same time as allowing you enough time to allow you to unwind in the comfort and splendour of Marchmont House, the recently restored 'Grade A' listed Palladian mansion awarded the Historic Houses/Sotheby' Award in 2018.

Limited to just the 20 guests staying in the House - this is an intimate 'house party' offering two nights stay with dinner, breakfast, lunch and drinks included.

Hugo Burge, Director of Marchmont Farms Limited, and host for the weekend said:

"I’m excited to bring together two artists who’s work I love, have collected and commissioned independently. Both push boundaries in their exploration of art’s representation of nature and humanity. I also have a great deal of respect for the &Gallery, who quite independently chose to work with these two artists, spotting their originality and brilliance. It will be a huge pleasure to explore their work in our weekend 'house party' huddle format with other interested guests - I look forward to it greatly.”
